たまひめちゃん

Who is Tamahime-chan?

A Portrait of Princess Tamahime

“Tamahime-chan” is modeled on the real-life “Princess Tamahime,” who was the wife of Lord Maeda Toshitsune, the third head of the Maeda clan of Kaga, and the grandson of Tokugawa Ieyasu.
“Princess Tamahime” was a princess with a father, the second shogun “Tokugawa Hidetada,” and a mother, “Go,”a niece of Oda Nobunaga. At age three, she married into the Kaga clan to tie the bond with Edo and Kanazawa. Her bridal procession from Edo to Kanazawa was luxurious and elaborate, involving the construction of roads, bridges, and other infrastructure and the construction of inn towns.

Even today, at the “Hyakumangoku Festival,” held in Kanazawa City, a procession that recreates the scene of Princess Tamahime’s bridal procession is very popular, and every year, a local five-year-old girl is chosen from the public to play the role of Princess Tamahime. For Kanazawa citizens, being selected to play the role of Princess Tamahime is a great honor and hits the news, just like a Cinderella story.
